I am a French American multidisciplinary artist from Connecticut and have lived in Paris since 2016. After getting my degree in Comparative Literature from The American University of Paris in 2021, I was hired as the Head of Online Content & Community Management at Popout Zine, where I have since helped develop the zine, online blog, and maintain meaningful relationships with artists, venues, and distributors. Through the meaningful work I was introduced to there, I rediscovered my insatiable love of writing and creating.
My collage work and writing is inspired by my love of history, feminism, genealogy, and the city of Paris itself, which have been major motifs in my understanding of the world around me and my life’s journey. Through the combination of personal & family photographs, magazines, vintage coffee table books from my local flea market, and other repurposed mixed media, I aim to not only explore my own life experiences and interests, but also those of the women, family members and societies that came before me, and preserve these stories. I have found that the present is in direct conversation with the past, and to contextualize and repair our ‘here and now,’ one must plunge into and explore the people and events from before us and progress and build on what they could not.
My professional name, La Compasseresse, is also a combination of these ideas; it comes from the feminization of the first part of my last name, Le Compasseur. The feminized name was originally used my ancestor Jeanne, who lived in Paris in the 14th century, and went forgotten until I found some of her records. I hope to not only honor her and her ingenuity in a system that would normally have reduced her to just a daughter or wife, but also to reclaim a part of my name for myself, and my female ancestors, from the one I was given as something of my own, especially with naming and genealogical conventions that disregard women’s identities and value.
